SFC Together with KCTA to Help Chinese Elementary Schools
The Kansas Consortium for Teaching about Asia (KCTA) housed at the
Center for East Asian Studies in the University of Kansas has partnered
with the Society for Friendship with China (SFC) to enhance the quality
of instruction in several Chinese elementary schools. Two of these, the
Han Jia Ping and the Yu Kou Village Schools are located in the Qinling
Mountains of Lantian County, Shaanxi Province in north central China
near the famous city of Xi'an, home to the Terracotta Warriors. Over
the past five years, KCTA has taken more than forty schoolteachers,
school administrators and school librarians from Missouri and Kansas to
visit these schools. Another visit is scheduled for this summer.
SFC together with KCTA has made cash donations that allowed these
schools to purchase new computer equipment, new desks and other
non-consumable goods. The donation this year will also allow
construction of a wall around the Yu Kou School to begin. The
individual American educators who are KCTA alums are bringing additional
gifts including books and even basketballs.
China is a growing economic power. One of the ways that it has achieved
this is through the dedicated study habits of its students. Even in
poor rural schools such as Yu Kou Village's, the level of math the
students master can exceed that studied by their contemporaries in
Kansas and Missouri. Seeing this first-hand often surprises the
American educators and encourages them to become better teachers back
home.
As the 21st century progresses, the relationship between America and
China is becoming ever more entwined. Both sides need to learn from
each other. Helping the Yu Kou Village School is a step in this
direction.
